The 2025 Finisher’s Medal of the Basel City Run features the Mittlere Brücke as it looked in 1902–1903, when a temporary bridge was added during construction work. This bridge, which will celebrate its 800th anniversary in 2025, was first mentioned in a document from 1225. In it, the monasteries of St. Blasien and Bürgel in the Black Forest were exempted from paying bridge tolls because they had supplied the timber for its construction. However, due to the earthquake of 1356, in which many historical records were lost, it cannot be said with certainty whether the bridge already stood at that time or was still under construction. In 1903, the bridge was given its current name “Mittlere Rheinbrücke” after being completed as a modern stone bridge between the Wettsteinbrücke and the Johanniterbrücke. In everyday speech, however, it is still most often simply called the “Mittlere Brücke.” The medal not only celebrates sporting achievement but also this significant piece of Basel’s history, which stands for both continuity and change.
A magical glow on the Mittlere Brücke
Since 1993, the course of the Basel City Run has led across the Mittlere Brücke – especially for adults – a picturesque section, particularly in the evening when the bridge shines in festive Christmas lights. For many participants, this moment is a highlight of the race, emphasizing the connection between sport and Basel’s unique atmosphere.
The 2025 Finisher’s Medal will be produced right in Basel by René F. Müller AG – a true piece of Basel craftsmanship. It can be ordered optionally when registering, allowing all participants to secure their unique keepsake of the Basel City Run. For children, the medal is already included in the entry fee.
